CALDERDALE, A View from the Edge


This 2026 production takes a look at some of the villages and rural areas on the boundaries of Calderdale from the air with Mark Sykes and adding local history and facts by Peter J. Thornton.

We begin at Wainstalls which is a small hamlet known for it's history of textile manufacturing in the 18th and 19th centuries. Close by is the Warley Moor Reservoir which is the home of the Halifax Sailing and Watersports Club.

This beautiful picture of Lumb Falls and Bridge is in the Crimsworth Dean valley near the village of Pecket Well which we fly over on our way to the moors at Widdop.

The Astronomy Centre at Todmorden is an interesting place and we have a tour of the Centre with one of the volunteers.

Walsden is the home of the
Gordon Rigg Garden Centre and Motor Museum, owner Peter Rigg gives us a tour of the Museum.
The Summit Tunnel is nearby and we get up close to the smoke stacks.

The M62 is the highest motorway in the country and we follow it along the boundary of Calderdale and Kirklees passing the Boothwood and Scammonden Reservoirs before arriving at Outlane and Sowood.

Historian John Brooke shows us around the ancient coal tramways of Clifton near Brighouse. The tramway took coal from the coal mines down to the canal basin in Brighouse and to the iron works at Low Moor.

Norwood Green is a village
on the edge of Bradford and Calderdale, we meet Historian Mary Twentyman who tells us
all about "The Friends of Judy Woods"

We end the film at Ogden and look around Ogden Water, we
take a walk away from the reservoir to look at the moorland and history around the reservoir, before ending on the promenade of the reservoir.
