Halifax is Calderdale’s largest town and has one of the most complete Victorian townscapes in Britain. That means there are iconic buildings at practically every corner you turn and the museums are hardly in short supply. From the unique Grade I-listed Piece Hall to Halifax Minster, one of the finest buildings in Yorkshire, this is a town immensely proud of its heritage.
Its hills may be steep but in Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall you’ve got some of the UK’s most beautiful countryside at your feet. From the canal side to the rolling greenery of Hardcastle Crags, visitors can lose themselves in the area’s local beauty. Wander around Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall’s traditional streets and you’ll immediately understand why there’s so much historic pride. It's also known as "Happy Valley" from the hit TV series on the BBC.
Nestled deep in the Calder Valley, Todmorden is often thought of as part Yorkshire and part Lancashire – and it offers a wholly unique experience. Whether you’re in town for the traditional cobbled streets dotted with their independent shops and cafes or the regular markets that draw in the crowds, there’s much for you to enjoy here. From the town centre, head along the canal towpath or just uphill in any direction, and a number of scenic walks await you, including the Calderdale Way.
Sowerby Bridge has always been an important crossing over the Ryburn and Calder rivers – possibly even dating as far back as the Roman occupation. And the area is steeped in interesting history. Two rivers and two canals form the heart of this fascinating mill town, which has become renowned for the diverse food and drink it has to offer. But there’s so much more to the area than great food. Sowerby Bridge is surrounded by some of the country’s finest and most dramatic landscapes.
Up the side of the valley is the hidden village of Luddenden. When Branwell Bronte lodged at the Lord Nelson Inn, he would no doubt have enjoyed the glorious oak woodlands and meadows that now make up Jerusalem Farm Local Nature Reserve.
This small town in Calderdale hosts an impressive selection of family-run shops giving Elland town centre a homely appeal. Elland is a proud community-driven town, and as such the town created an annual Festival of Joy called ‘Welland’ focusing on health and well-being, held every June. Famed for its Brass Band, Brighouse is a vibrant market town perfectly central for any stay in West Yorkshire. Whether you fancy a saunter around a sprawling local park or you’re a keen walker hoping to take in beautiful scenery, you’ll find it all on Brighouse’s doorstep.
Over recent years, Brighouse has earned itself a reputation for putting on some of the best themed weekends and festivals in the area.
